Hudson Taylor Part 2

Here is the second part of the story of Hudson Taylor, it tells ( compactly) of his first visit to China. Sorry it took so long:)

Hudson Taylor sailed from Liverpool and at age 21 he was finally in China! The nearly fatal voyage aboard the ship “Dumfries” took 5 months. In China He was immediately met with civil war, Soldiers were in the streets constantly, firing often broke out. His whole first year was covered with hardships, He had to learn to speak fluent Chinese, he suffered from homesickness, headaches, and bad health.

Slowly though, he began to feel more at home in China, in his first stay he made 18 preaching tours around the vicinity of Shanghai, he found that his skills in medicine often earned him entrance into the Chinese’ homes where he would share the gospel.

He decided to don the traditional Chinese garments and even wore a queue ( a traditional Chinese hairstyle, resembling a pigtail.) This made him able to go relatively unnoticed in the cities and, I think, showed the Chinese that he did not come just to show them about his “superior culture”. But that he respected them and their culture and wanted to help them.

By the end of his first year in China, Shanghai was a peaceful place and the coastal area was a good place to continue the mission work. But, Hudson longed to continue, away from the safe ports. He wanted all of China to know of the Gospel.

In Ningpo, China on January 20th 1858 Hudson married Maria Dyer, a young lady he had met in Ningpo sometime earlier. 2 ½ years later, after 7 years in China, Hudson headed back to England with his wife and their young daughter Gracie. This is the end of Hudson’s first visit to China.
